Nerd Bicycles

Quick! Think of a nerd on a bicycle. What should that look like?

If you envisioned something like the "accountant" on the right then you aren't thinking Nerdy enough.

No, what you should be thinking of is what type of Nerd is riding the bicycle and which of the following things they enjoy.

Star Wars

Star Trek

Game of Thrones

The Hobbit

Dune

Warhammer

Dungeons & Dragons 

Superheroes

Science Fiction

Engineering

Design

Math

Etc

And thus you end up with bicycles featuring Darth Vader or other characters from Star Wars.

Or even a bicycle decorated to look like a Speeder from Star Wars.

Or decorated to look like a starship from the newer Star Trek TV shows (Discovery, etc)

Or simply painted and the numbers added from the Enterprise. Fashion choices optional.

The point, essentially, is that true Nerds are going to decorate or modify their bicycles due to their Nerdish interests.

They're not going to decorate it so they look like the accountant way at the top.

They might also choose to invest time and energy (and money) into making their bicycle more engineered than normal. Eg. A solar powered bicycle?

Or maybe they completed a bicycle mechanic training course and they want to make something very artistic and sculptural? The type of person who designs their own custom bicycles.

The point I am trying to make is that there are many different kinds of Nerds, and this fact is reflected in the type of bicycles they would ride.

For example...

What would a Math Nerd want to ride?

Well, I present to you... The Pi Bike.

Seriously, there's no limit to what is out there and available for Nerds to create. As Nerds we are inherently creative people, whether we are copying what we see in movies, TV or comic books, or whether we are exploring topics such as engineering, design, math and more.

It is really just a matter of having the proper skills. And one place to get those skills would be to take a course at the Quadra Bike School with Smokey Dymny. Learn the skills, build your dream bicycle(s), maybe even make a YouTube channel dedicated to making nerd bicycles.

And then SELL those Nerd Bicycles for a tidy profit.

Who says Bicycle Mechanics cannot make money???

How to Read the Binary Alphabet in 5 Minutes

The Binary Alphabet is pretty easy to learn, but first you need to know what you are looking for. Each binary letter (or number) is an 8 digit code of 0s and 1s. To make it visually easier for you to recognize I have split the 8 digit code down the middle.

0110 0001 = a (for math reference 0000 0001 = 1)

0110 0010 = b (for math reference 0000 0010 = 2)

0110 0011 = c (because 1+2 = 3, so a+b = c)

0110 0100 = d (for math reference 0000 0100 = 4)

0110 0101 = e

See the pattern? Each letter in the alphabet starts with 011 and the 0s and 1s that follow indicate the number of the letter in the alphabet based upon math. When you reach 0111 0000 then it is a p or higher letter which means that when you see the first 0110 or 01111 it indicates whether it is at the beginning or the end of the alphabet. Otherwise you might confuse your Js with your Zs, so to speak.

The numbers in binary are coded in a similar way, starting with 0000 0000 for 0, 0000 0001 for 1, etc.

That's it. Binary isn't complicated. It just requires a little bit of math. A 5 year old can learn binary because it is really that easy. Someone who learns how to read binary can get so good at it that they just look at the numbers of 0s and 1s and instantly recognize the numbers, letters or symbols.

If you want to stretch your nerd muscles you can people's questions with:

0110 1110 0110 1111 or 0111 1001 0110 0101 0111 0011

Of course, doing so... Some people will think you're insane. Or a huge dork. Or be really impressed.

Binary isn't just for computer dorks either.

Binary technically predates the invention of computers. The modern binary number system, the basis for binary code, was invented by German polymath Gottfried Leibniz in 1689.

What is a polymath?

A polymath is a person who has studied many different subjects and has an extensive knowledge of many subjects. Basically a polymath is another term for someone who is very nerdy. Similar to a polyglot (a person who speaks many languages).

Well, now that you've learned how to read the Binary Alphabet, you can add that as one of the languages you speak/read. Did that take less than 5 minutes? Yes, yes it did.

Speaking in binary code takes a long time however, so maybe only use that when you really want to show off to other nerds.

1 Million Visitors to Nerdovore.com

This past year (sometime in October 2020) Nerdovore.com surpassed 1 million visitors and this fact went unnoticed until February 2021.

Honestly I have just been so busy during 2020 I didn't notice.

I only noticed today because I was adding a new YouTube button to make it easier for people subscribe to my Charles Moffat YouTube channel and I randomly decided to check the stats for the blog.

I started Nerdovore in July 2011, which means we are nearing the 10 year anniversary 5 months from now. Since then the website has grown in leaps and bounds.

Nerdovore became profitable in February 2015, so I registered the domain name Nerdovore.com at that time. So that is another anniversary of sorts. It has now been 6 years of profitability for this blog.

You will notice that the Google ads take up very little space on the blog itself. This works for me because I prefer advertising to be as minimal as possible. You will however notice that there is considerably more space used for marketing my fantasy books.

As an extra measure of profitability I have also been using Nerdovore.com to advertise both my fantasy books on Amazon and my archery lessons in Toronto business. So "profitability" is really just a matter of how many people purchase my books or how many people sign up for archery lessons in Toronto.

While it hasn't made me super rich, it has afforded me a life of comfort and I get to enjoy being my own boss, setting my own schedule, etc. I get to shoot arrows for a living, watch other people shoot arrows, and then go home and write fantasy books about shooting monsters with arrows. I love it!

What are the most popular posts on Nerdovore.com?

Easily the fantasy maps. 6 of the top 10 most popular posts currently on Nerdovore are about fantasy maps. In general the top 10 most popular posts make up a large healthy percentage of that first 1 million visitors. People come looking for fantasy maps and they generally find what they are looking for.

That said I am still planning on adding more future posts about other fantasy maps and also science fiction maps too.

 

What are some of my favourite posts?

I really enjoyed doing the interviews with fantasy authors a year ago, but when COVID happened I got distracted and stopped doing the interviews. I would like to do them again sometime.

What would I like to change about Nerdovore.com?

Well... I would like to do more YouTube videos. That is definitely a big thing for me right now. Promoting youtube.com/c/CharlesMoffatToronto is a big part of my marketing plans for my fantasy books during the next decade.

There is also a separate Nerdovore youtube channel, but I am less worried about it. Technically the Nerdovore channel is more popular, but I want to grow youtube.com/c/CharlesMoffatToronto so I can build an audience and post a lot more fantasy book reviews. My goal in 2021 is to be posting at least 1 new fantasy book review per month.

As part of that it means I need to be doing more fantasy book reviews that end up being posted on Nerdovore too.

Thus while I had fun doing the fantasy author interviews last year, my big thing this year is to be writing a lot more fantasy book reviews.

Note - I will not be writing any book reviews about books that I dislike. I am not a fan of writing (or reading) negative book reviews. Part of it is I don't like to be inadvertently advertising a book that I dislike.

I would also like to be posting more food recipes for "Nerd Foods". That is something else I want to do more of. Especially cookie recipes. Who doesn't want more cookies???

So what does the future hold?

Well, I don't expect it to take another 9.5 years to reach the 2 million visitors mark. I do expect the popularity of Nerdovore.com to continue to grow, especially as I post more fantasy maps and book reviews - as well as generic nerd culture stuff. Between posting more maps and book reviews I foresee Nerdovore.com continuing to grow in popularity.

During 2020 Nerdovore.com garnered 157,000+ visitors, with similar numbers in 2018 and 2019. The last three years has seen a huge increase in the website's popularity. With a little extra effort I foresee it could top 200,000 or 250,000 visitors during 2021 or 2022.

Thus I foresee putting more work into growing Nerdovore (and making it more profitable). If it could be getting 300,000+ visitors per year by 2023 - or sooner - then I would be quite pleased with its progress as a blog.

Also keep in mind I have other blogs that I devote my time to, but I do foresee posting on Nerdovore.com more frequently in the future as I continue to build an audience.

Five Predictions for Season 7 of Game of Thrones

SPOILER ALERT!

The new season of Game of Thrones started last night and like any diehard Thrones fan, it is now a good time to speculate on what is going to happen during this season.

#1. The Wall is Coming Down

The Wall is magical, we know this because Benjen Stark cannot pass beyond the Wall due to the Wall's magical properties.

According to legend the Wall cannot be destroyed except by the Horn of Winter, which is also a magical object. When the horn is blown it is supposed to cause vibrations within the ice that will cause the ice within the Wall to shatter. (This is similar to the Biblical story of horns being used to cause an earthquake in the city of Jericho - Joshua 6:20.)

Sam Tarly way back in second season found a horn along with a stash of dragonglass. Hint hint. The horn is likely currently at Castle Black.

#2. Jon Snow is going to Dragonstone and will meet Dany and Tyrion

It will not be the first time Jon Snow and Tyrion have hung out together. Both shared a friendship during Tyrion's visit to the Wall in Season 1. But it will be the first time Jon has met Dany, and this grouping of all three together will put all three Targaryen's on the same island together at the same time.

Jon Snow will go to Dragonstone after he receives a raven from Sam Tarly, telling him that there is a giant amoung of dragonglass on the island of Dragonstone. If he is smart, Jon will also try to convince Dany that the real threat is in the north and that the White Walkers are coming.

And if we are lucky, Jon will get attacked by fire or dragonfire, and we will learn that he (and possibly Tyrion too) are all immune to fire. Dany will then realize that all three of them are Targaryens.

The end game of this will be Dany, Tyrion and Jon all riding dragons together.

#3. Cersei will ally herself with the Starks, but secretly plot to kill them

In the ever-shifting alliances of Game of Thrones, Cersei needs more allies. Jon Snow / Sansa Stark will offer her a deal to end the war in an effort to get more people to help fight the White Walkers. But Sansa will know that Cersei is not to be trusted.

During this Cersei will take her army north, including her beast-zombie the Mountain.

When Cersei does strike and betray them, Jaime will have to choose between letting her kill thousands of people - or killing Cersei. But the Mountain will stop him...

Cersei could eventually get captured by the Night King and become a White Walker - the Night Queen.

#4. Brienne and the Hound killing Wights and White Walkers

The Hound (Sandor Clegane) is heading north and now knows the Fire God is real. He has also seen a vision of the undead wights in the north, and knows they are heading south. Clegane vs Wights? Bring on the wights because Clegane is going to be awesome at killing them.

There is only one problem, Clegane doesn't have a Valyrian steel sword and will break any weapon he currently has when fighting a White Walker.

Enter Brienne - who does have a Valyrian steel sword, Oathkeeper. And she is equally awesome in combat as the Hound.

Now put those two together, fighting back to back vs a horde of White Walkers and wights. That is a fight worth watching!

#5. Sam Tarly will become a Wizard

Magical learning is one of the things maesters sometimes get into while at the Citadel. In the books Sam meets other students at the Citadel who have learned that magic has come back into the world with the birth of dragons, that dragons essentially emanate magical power that can be tapped into. Sam will realize that what Jon Snow and everyone else really needs is not a maester, but a wizard.

Which will fulfill what Sam said back in Season 1: "I always wanted to be a wizard." to which the other guys laughed, because at the time it was a silly idea.

And there is a line in a later season in which Gilly says to him: "You are like a wizard."

Bonus Prediction #1. Gendry will forge a Valyrian steel sword for Arya

The smith who taught Gendry is the same smith who made Oathkeeper and Widow's Wail by melting down Ned Stark's huge sword Ice. This means that smith knows how to melt down and reforge Valyrian steel.

Which means Gendry probably knows how to reforge Valyrian steel.

Add dragonfire to this mixture, and Gendry might someday be able to make new Valyrian steel blades, without the need to melt down old Valyrian steel blades.

Eventually Arya is going to realize the real threat is also in the north, and her sword Needle will end up breaking if she tries to use it against a White Walker. At some point she and Gendry will meet up, and Gendry will make her a new sword which will be useful against White Walkers.

Bonus Prediction #2. The Reappearance of Dark Sister

There is a Valyrian steel sword which Arya mentions in an earlier season while talking to Tywin. The sword she mentions is "Dark Sister", a Valyrian steel sword which had once belonged to a Targaryen woman. The sword was small and slimmer - like Needle is - and designed for the hand of a woman.

It is possible that Arya could end up with the sword Dark Sister instead of Gendry forging her a new sword, or it is possible Dany could end up with the sword instead, as it makes sense that at some point Dany should start wearing armour and learning how to defend herself. She won't always have her dragons handy so she really should have a sword to defend herself with.

Either way, someone will end up getting Dark Sister and Arya and Dany are the two most likely candidates.

Bonus Prediction #3. When Arya heads north, she will reunite with her dire wolf Nymeria

And Nymeria will be big enough that Arya can now ride on her wolf.

But first she needs to head south to King's Landing.

Bonus Prediction #4. Cyrio is not dead and neither is King Stannis

Cyrio is alive. Somewhere. Stannis is alive too, but now missing a leg.

My prediction is Cyrio will pop up in the north east, roughly west of Braavos.

I predict Stannis will pop up during a plot twist involving Brienne, in which she explains that she realized Stannis was the rightful king, that he was only doing his duty as king, yada yada, and that she realized she needed to punish him but not kill him.

Bonus Prediction #5. Podrick Payne is one of King Robert's bastards

While everyone knows Gendry is one of King Robert's bastards, I have a hunch Podrick Payne is also one of King Robert's offspring.

The revelation probably won't be revealed until after Gendry and Podrick meet, and they will only learn they are half-brothers thanks to Bran.

This will become important because it will mean that they are the rightful heirs of the Baratheon family, which is why keeping Stannis alive for now becomes important.

It also should be noted that the Baratheon family are relatives of the Targaryens. So both Gendry and Podrick do have a bit of Targaryen blood in them.

Hero Forge Custom Miniature + Painting Miniatures

So I asked my girlfriend for a Hero Forge Custom Miniature for xmas. It arrived early and I am fortunate to live in a household where we celebrate xmas the whole month, so gift giving can happen any day. Hence why I received my gift on December 3rd - the day it arrived in the mail. It was not a surprise, I did design the miniature after all and ask for it.

Hero Forge makes miniatures using a 3D printer - and can make transparent plastic, strong plastic (which apparently only comes in white), and metal - and you can order the figurines in a variety of sizes, so you are not limited to the normal 1 inch base figurine.

Behold what I saw upon first opening the package.

And wow. That is a lot of packaging for one tiny miniature. (Note, you save on shipping costs if you buy multiple miniatures.)

Even the cat agrees that it is a lot of packaging, as she gleefully bites and plays with the box and bubble wrap. (I am going to be posting a video of her attacking the packaging later today on Victoria has Claws, our cat's youtube channel.)

Below, the front view of the miniature out of the packaging. His name is "Wrathgar", a character I designed circa 2003 and have been using, playing in Dungeons and Dragons, writing about for roughly 12 years now. eg. You can read one of Wrathgar's adventures / origin story in the book "The Adventures of Wrathgar: The Assassin's Trail". The character is Conan-esque, but Wrathgar favours the bow over sword and axe. His choice of clothing is also more unique, as not many people wear antlers on their helmet - which means it was also a challenge to find a company that has an antler helmet on their list of options.

So I immediately had to begin the painting process. I got my box of paints, my roll of paintbrushes from studying painting for 5 years in university, lots of water to drink, something to watch while I paint, and a clean painting surface, and more water to wash paintbrushes in.

Before painting I washed the miniature in hot water to make sure there wasn't any residue leftover from the painting process. The manufacturer recommends washing the miniature before painting.

Below, the base coat of the miniature. Wrathgar is a very nature-loving character and tends to wear lots of brown, so "burnt umber" made a good base coat.

Additional layers saw me add black shading, titanium white for the antlers, and vandyke brown. For the face I used a mixture of jaune brilliant and naples yellow.

And here I used phthalo green blue shade for his arrow fletching.

The miniature is not done with the painting process. I still want to go back and do the following.

• Fine tune details on his face.
• Add white and blue for his eyes.
• Ivory colouration for the antlers, which should not be completely white.
• More shading around his armour.
• Gold hilt for his dagger.
• And other details I can think of later.

I was very pleased with Hero Forge and what I saw on their website - and yes their prices are pretty expensive, but it was totally worth. I have seen Wrathgar come to life before me in a miniature.

Note - If readers and their friends want to save on costs, I recommend ordering as a group in order to save on shipping costs.

Prior to this I was using a Dark Sun "Half Giant Psychic Warrior" as the miniature for Wrathgar, which was a good representation of Wrathgar's physique, but failed to point out that Wrathgar spends much of his time using his bow. So now I can use the half giant when he is using his sword, and my new miniature when he is using his bow - which is his preferred weapon of choice.

And for those people who are curious, Wrathgar is normally a ranger when I play pen + paper D&D. In DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) however Wrathgar has been both a ranger and a barbarian, operating on the DDO Argonnessen server under the names Wraethgar and Wrathggar,because apparently, somehow, Wrathgar was taken. Go figure.

The Robot of Sherwood

"The Robot of Sherwood" is the 3rd episode of season 8 of Doctor Who...

And I cannot help but think, how nerdy is that episode?

I haven't even seen it, but I know it combines Robin Hood, robots and Doctor Who - so it has to be pretty damn nerdy.

I mean, com'on, Doctor Who is so nerdy I decided to give it its own category. But tossing robots AND Robin Hood into the mix? Well that is just a trifecta right there (huzzah, horsebetting analogies!).

I think Netflix has Doctor Who on there so I should be able to watch the episode on there, except this particular episode came out in September 2014 so I might have to wait until Summer 2015 before the episode is finally is available on Netflix.
